Smart grid development (Smart Grid) is currently a groundbreaking trend and a top concern of the electricity industry in Vietnam as well as the world in order to improve the quality and reliability of the power supply.

PC Da Nang discussed automation of distribution grid with experts from partner companies

To support the development in line with this modern trend, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1670/QD-TTg dated November 8, 2012 approving the Smart Grid Development Scheme in Vietnam. Accordingly, in order to develop smart grids in Vietnam, it is necessary to focus on enhancing reliability, enhancing the efficiency of power system operation, and focusing on distribution grids. On that basis, synchronously many solutions need to be deployed; in which, automation of the distribution grid is one of the effective solutions, helping to improve the reliability of power supply as well as the efficiency of distribution network operation.

Currently, Da Nang city's power grid is operating in closed circuit and open mode. When a fault occurs on the power grid, it takes a certain time for the operator to isolate the fault point, change the grid connection, and restore the power supply to the customer. As a result, a number of customers will have power interruptions due to operation time. On the side of the Power Company, the targets of commercial power output were also affected; Power supply reliability and electrical customer satisfaction.

In Vietnam, some units have deployed the automation of distribution grids. However, the implementation is still small, only applied to a few medium voltage feeders, and no unit has successfully deployed on the entire power grid. This comes from reasons such as not choosing the right technology; difficulties in terms of procedures, technology, techniques, etc.

In an effort to improve the reliability of power supply and power quality, and improve the quality of customer service, Da Nang PC has researched new technologies for distribution grid automation and boldly implemented application in practice. Until January 10, 2018, Da Nang PC has successfully tested the distribution grid automation system for feeder 471/ Ngu Hanh Son 220 and 472/ Ngu Hanh Son 220. These are two medium voltage transmission lines. There is no loop connection in the air (open operation) through MC 471 Dong Tra at the pole position 153-472E13, supplying power to the loads on the tourist route connecting Da Nang City and Hoi An City; including important loads such as maternity - pediatric hospital, hospital of Ngu Hanh Son district, People's Committee of Ngu Hanh Son district...

Configuring the distribution grid automation system at the control center

PC Da Nang has conducted surveys, and installed additional equipment including recloser and information equipment. Under the guidance of experts from My Phuong Company and Survalent, the Company's engineers actively research, configure the database and software at the Control Center, build test scenarios, and successfully implemented a pilot project with 02 feeders and 05 circuit breakers, marking an important step forward in applying new technology to the power grid, developing smart grid in Da Nang city. This is the basis for Da Nang PC to continue to expand the project with the coordination of many devices: Line breaker, Recloser, LBS, RMU... and build orientation and development roadmap in the next phases.

The completed work ensures electrical safety and quality of electricity supplied to each household and important buildings in the area; In particular, the reliability of power supply to the regional grid has been significantly increased. According to calculations, the project, after being put into operation, will contribute to improving the reliability of power supply for the regional power grid with the SAIDI index (average outage time of customers) decreasing by 5,737 minutes, the SAIFI index decreasing by 5.737 minutes. (average outage frequency of customers) decreased by 0.286 times.

In addition, the project contributes to promoting the roadmap to build Da Nang's power grid into a smart grid with high technical and automation content. The successful implementation of the project is the basis for scaling up the application of distribution grid automation (DAS) throughout the city.
