Technical Seminar "Introduction of Technology and Application of Series Capacitor Banks (Series Bank) for 500kV Transmission Grid"

On August 28, 2019, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) cooperated with My Phuong Trading Co., Ltd., Eaton's Cooper, and CEPRI Research Institute to organize a technical seminar titled "Introduction to the technology and application of series capacitor banks (Series Bank) for the 500kV transmission grid” at the headquarters of EVNNPT.

Attending the seminar, EVNNPT's side included Mr. Vo Luong Nhan - Deputy Technical Department of EVNNPT, Mr. Hoang Van Tuyen - Deputy Director of Northern Power Projects Project Management Unit (NPPMB), Mr. Nguyen Minh Phuc - Deputy Head of NPPMB Division ) and more than 25 employees from key departments (PTC1 Technical Department, Customer Department, Safety Department, Information Technology Department, and Construction Management Board) and connected directly to PTC2, PTC3, and PTC4 units.

Eaton's Cooper and CEPRI Research Institute include Mr. Choon Tan Siong - International Sales Manager of Eaton, Mr. Charlie Zhu - Director of Eaton Capacitors, and Mr. Yanbao Lee - CEPRI Science & Technology Co., Ltd. with Dr. Nguyen Huu Phuc- Technical Advisor of My Phuong Trading Co., Ltd. - an authorized agent of Eaton's Cooper in Vietnam.

At the conference, Eaton presented the technology and application of series capacitor banks (Series Bank) and static compensation technology (SVC) on 500kV transmission lines as well as grid compensating technology. HVDC, UHVDC DC, and UHVDC high voltage transmission power supply voltage up to 1100kV for Power Transmission Companies around the world.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Phuc gave an in-depth technical presentation on the structure, working principles, and application of series capacitor banks (Series Bank) and SVC, which attracted great attention from EVNNPT staff.

Eaton's Cooper's capacitor bank product line has been highly appreciated in world markets in general and Vietnam in particular because of its high quality, competitive price and many advantages in technical design such as:

  • Capacitor loss rate (W/kVAR) is very low
  • Sealed stainless steel condenser housing
  • The technology of mechanical clamping the poles of the capacitor is very durable
  • Capacitor case failure curve has 100% accuracy, making it easier and more accurate to coordinate with protection curves of protective devices, improving working reliability and life of capacitors.
  • The compensating capacitor uses a liquid dielectric type Edison VI which is completely free of PCB (non-PCB) toxic components, which eliminates environmental pollution and is not harmful to human health.

Since 1996 until now, My Phuong Company has provided the Vietnamese grid with horizontal and series-compensated capacitor banks (from medium voltage to 500kV - including vertical capacitor banks at Tan 500kV substation. Dinh & Di Linh) with a total capacity of over 5257MVAR manufactured by Eaton's Cooper.

During the conference, many questions were raised and experts from Eaton's Cooper and CEPRI answered clearly and fully with their experience in applying series capacitor banks in many countries.

The workshop ended successfully with the hope of contributing to promoting the application of series capacitor banks on the EVNNPT grid and meeting the future development goals of the grid.
